Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and creative software engineer with strong cyber and malware expertise to work on cutting-edge intelligent systems research applied to challenging problems in cyber security.

Sample projects:

  • Identifying the lineage of malware, its components and their purposes, and predicting the future developments of malware
  • Using advanced machine learning to detect novel malware in a cloud-based environment
  • Using probabilistic modeling technology to maintain situation awareness of cyber systems using a range of data sources

In addition to cyber techniques like static and dynamic analysis and network packet analysis, you will use ideas from a number of fields including probabilistic modeling, machine learning, programming languages, and natural language understanding. You will develop prototype systems that will apply advanced techniques to address specific needs. You will work in small project-oriented groups with a principal investigator/scientist and a senior software engineer. You will also have the opportunity to attend conferences and have your work published.    

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Design and implement a variety of algorithms for cyber defense
  • Research and provide expertise in understanding cyber systems, including networks, hosts, software/firmware, and users
  • Understand user needs and build systems that are responsive to those needs
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor and other team members

Skills & Requirements

  • Masters in Computer Science/Engineering or related area, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least two years experience in these areas
  • Experience with cyber defense and malware
  • Proficiency in Java
  • A solid background in designing, programming, and documenting complex software systems
  • Ability to work independently or within a team environment
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with multiple evolving projects
  • Ability to pick up new concepts and languages quickly
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Code samples may be requested

Desirable qualities:

  • Knowledge of embedded systems and their security
  • Proficiency with reverse engineering tools like IDA Pro
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques
  • Familiarity with Scala
