Job Description

Due to continued growth and success, we are seeking to a hire a Lead Application Developer for our Chicago HQ location.  An Application Development Lead is responsible for establishing the low level design on one or more projects. In addition, the Application Development Lead will provide technical leadership for one or more platforms for application development used by the Huron Legal team.  A team of software engineers (target size is 3 – 6 engineers per lead) in implementing features and fixing bugs within that design. 

The App Dev Lead is a key role on Huron Legal software projects and will work closely with one or more Software Architects to ensure the design fits well within the overall architecture for the product line as well as working closely with the project manager to ensure that delivery time-lines are met and risks are managed.

Job Details:

Contribute to software projects by signing up for and completing items off backlog. The amount of work assigned may be lower than that for an Associate Software Engineer given the non-code driven responsibilities of the position.

  1. Conduct design and code reviews.
  2. Coordinate work of developers.
  3. Resolve technical issues which are keeping developers from being productive.
  4. Review, understand, and, if necessary, identify deficiencies in requirements on backlog items.
  5. Keep the project manager informed of progress, risks to delivery milestones and blocking issues.
  6. Provide estimates (referred to as T-shirts) to the project manager to allow for release planning.  Work with the architect and developers as needed to produce estimates.
  7. Review the task break downs of developers to ensure they are complete and accurate.
  8. Review inflow of features and bugs with Project Manager and Architect.
  9. Provide technical expertise and leadership within one or more technology areas. 


  1. Work with the architect in the establishment of guidelines, processes and templates to facilitate development.  Examples would be .NET coding standards, code patterns, and helper objects.
  2. Mentor junior developers and ensure the quality of their code including but not limited to pairing, code review and informal feedback. 
  3. Promote a positive team atmosphere with other developers, QA and Business Analysts.
  4. Provide feedback as necessary to Project Manager and/or Architect on developer performance.
  5. Interviews for new developer positions as assigned.


  1. Work with your coach/supervisor to create quarterly training goals to keep yourself current in with core technologies, tools and processes. 
  2. Work with coaches to contribute to the training plans of more junior developers.
  3. Contribute to formal training and distribution of technical information to the broader teams and appropriate parties in other departments.


  1. Consistently follow established coding, code check in, task tracking and other processes.
  2. Make recommendations to improve process.


  1. Gain mastery of one or more of the business tools which the team is responsible for, and remain a top domain expertise resource as those tools evolve and/or are replaced with other tools.
  2. Develop an understanding of the overall eDiscovery process and Huron’s V3locity solution including how the different elements of the technology stack and architecture fit together and the implications of changing one piece. Keep yourself and encourage others to be up to date with core technologies and development environments used by the team. Examples include .NET, HTML5, and WCF. Become an expert in the components of these systems we use in our daily work.
  3. Make recommendations to the Project Manager, Architects, and senior management on the tools and scope of work for internal initiatives. 


  1. Adhere to and communicate coding standards.
  2. Facilitate the ongoing quality of builds. Ensure developers on team do not break builds, and, in the event of a build failure, track down the cause and have the developer responsible correct it.
  3. Refactor code when there are clear opportunities and it would not materially impact the size of the story you are working on.  Make recommendations for larger refactoring / redesign efforts when the scope would materially increase the size of the Story you are working on.
  4. Proactively identify industry and company best practices and techniques that can be applied to increase quality and productivity.

Skills & Requirements

Demonstrated and consistent experience in leading software development teams, up to date on current technologies, design trends and best known methods in designing and developing software applications. 

  • Generally 10 years of experience in software industry.
  • 7 years of experience as hands on software developer in .NET.
  • 4 years of experience with SQL, at least two with SQL Server.
  • 2 years of experience with process automation and/or application services.
  • 1 year of experience with unit test automation tools.
  • 3 years of experience in designing complex software applications.
  • 2 to 3 years of experience in supervising and leading small teams.
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related discipline or equivalent work experience is required.

Location: Chicago, IL.  Our team is located at our Headquarters downtown Chicago, located one block from Union Station.

Travel: Minimal.
